“Those dirty Americans…”

Talking about stereotypes: German magazine “Stern” shows a slide show about ‘Energy Hog’ USA — have a look, the pictures speak for themselves.(to jump to the next picture, click on ‘weiter’ on the lower right corner). The first picture shows glowing American cities from space…

But again, is THIS really the US? In Germany, there is only “Bush equals US”. Maybe someone should tell them that there are many people who DO care, volunteer and who want to change something. Typical German way to approach such topics: very dualistic, black and white. I am sure it would be easy to find ‘double standards’ in Germany, dying forests, rivers, chemical factories and all those people smoking in bars and restaurants..

Kyoto protocol contradictory?

Hermann Scheer, German Eurosolar president, is pretty sceptic about Kyoto. In an interview with ‘Die Sueddeutsche’ he said that the protocol gives Governments a good excuse to do nothing at all.

Methan, the energy source of the future? Right now, it’s very difficult to find metanhydrate. It exists in very cold temperates or in high pressure areas. To use it, you need to melt Gashydrate. Die Zeit Gashydrat kommt im Alltag nicht vor, es existiert nur bei Eiseskälte oder unter hohem Druck. Selbst bei 50 Bar (rund 25-mal mehr als in einem Autoreifen) darf die Temperatur 5 Grad Celsius nicht übersteigen. Schmilzt ein Liter Gashydrat, dann schäumen 164 Liter Methangas heraus, zurück bleibt eine Pfütze aus 0,8 Liter Wasser. Wieso gibt es diesen scheinbar so exotischen Stoff dennoch in derart gewaltigen Mengen?

Die Böden der Tiefsee sind durchweg kälter als ein Kühlschrank, für starken Druck sorgt die hohe, darüber stehende Wassersäule. Auch tiefgefrorene Permafrostböden in Sibirien, Alaska oder Kanada enthalten Gashydrat. Methan (CH4) ist Hauptbestandteil von Erd-, Faul-, Sumpf- oder Biogas. Es entsteht, wenn Biomasse luftdicht verrottet. Seit Jahrmillionen sinken Reste von Algen und Plankton auf den Meeresgrund und verrotten im Sediment. Viel CH4 plus H2O ergibt Gigatonnen Gashydrat.

I am in Europe right now. Unfortunately, I am not as often online as I thought I would be. Have been to Freiburg (the solar capital of Germany) and Munich so far.
