Wuppertal Institute – Factor Four Research Desk Welcome to the webpage of the Wuppertal Institute’s Factor Four Research Desk!

Our name refers to the book “Factor Four – Doubling Wealth, Halving Resource Use” written by Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Amory and Hunter Lovins in 1996. The Factor Four Research Desk was set up in summer 2000 in order to develop a research agenda on this fascinating topic. Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) are to be found here.

In the beginning, Factor Four was an idea rather than a research agenda. This has changed. The Factor Four Research Desk calls for dissemination of eco-efficient products and services. Its central feature is on institutions, i.e. what institutions matter and how their evolution can be analysed. This feature places the research desk in the realm of comparative institutional analysis. We intend to build a bridge between such academic research and the problem-solving efforts of WI. The approach has been described in a WI-paper.
